ARTICLES AND DISSERTATIONS

  • Piotr Żmigrodzki, Ewa Ulitzka, Tomasz Nowak : On Lexicographic Awareness of Candidates for Polish Language Researchers (Based on Survey Research)
The article presents the results of the survey concerning the usage of Polish language dictionaries. The research was carried out among Polish Philology students of the Silesian University in the year 2004. As the research shows, the respondents. knowledge about the dictionaries is scarce and they usually own old dictionaries or the ones which are used in secondary schools. With reference to this, the authors suggest to focus more on the contemporary lexicographic supply on the market during academic classes on lexicology as well as lexicography.
  • Anna Dąbrowska, Małgorzata Pasieka : The Concept of a Guidebook for Difficult Areas of Polish or a Lexicon for Foreigners
The article presents the concept of the lexicon for students learning Polish as a foreign language. The lexicon aims at providing intermediate and advanced students with appropriate information on the .difficult areas of Polish. which are: complicated and rare inflection patterns, accommodation roles, principles of semantic combination and words similar in their phonetic form or having similar word building structure. The contents of the lexicon is based on 11,000 language errors excerpted from the written essays produced by intermediate and advanced learners of Polish as a foreign language. Each entry contains grammatical, semantic and pragmatic information. The entries are illustrated with examples of the incorrect usage of the language from the gathered material and with the corrected structures. The lexicon contains problematical, lexical, phrasal and morpheme entries.
  • Alina Kępińska : Inflection and Syntax of Numerals in Rozmyślanie przemyskie - Connectability with Nouns, Part 2.
The second part of the article analyses inflection of general numerals from 5 to 10, mass and various numerals featuring in Rozmyślanie przemyskie, the vastest 16-century apocryph in connection with the form of the described noun. Numerals from 5 to 10 still have the old declinational endings, e.g. piąci, sze.ci, siedmi, dziesiąci,piącią, siedmią. Syntactic differences in comparison with contemporary forms result from the lack of masculine-personal category on the one hand, e.g. dziesięć mężów, and from the beginnings of the syntactic agreement (which is obligatory nowadays), occurring beside the former syntactic reign on the other, e.g. siedmi pannam, dziesiąci dziewicam, o dziesiąci dziewicach,po siedmi lat,nad po dziesiąci lat, nad piąci miast. Among inflectional forms of mass numerals, of which only the former neutral gender singular has survived, there are remnants of both other genders e.g. siedmiora pro.ba, dwoj lud, dwoję rzecz and other numbers, e.g. dwoja elementa, pięciory księgi. These examples prove the original congruence between this kind of numerals and nouns, e.g. dziesięcioro przykazanie, o dziewi ęcioru błogosławieniu. There are, however, some examples of the syntactic reign, e.g. dwoje garliczek. The linguistic relict shows formation process of morphological dominants on the one hand and non-stable syntax between numerals and nouns on the other hand.
  • Marek Kaszewski : From the Issues of the Description of the 16th Century Category of nomina instrumenti
The author of this article presents general conclusions concerning lexical basis of the 16th century Polish excerpted from the published volumes and the card index of The 16th Century Polish Dictionary. The idea was to juxtapose, with the aid of statistics, two types of relations between lexical and wordbuilding systems: lexical and word-building items rated among nomina instrumenti word-building category. The author proves that in this case there is no point in considering the activity of some suffixes, but to study the activity of word-building categories and semantic categories of names of tools, because, as calculation shows, the number of derivates is nearly equal to nonderived names of tools.
  • Joanna Zaucha : The Introductory Semantic Characteristics of Selected Meanings of the Adjective równy (Equal, Straight)
The aim of the article is to analyze two views in lexicography on three predicates of the item równy. Descriptive units have been based on A. Bogus ławski.s (1987, 1993, and others) criterion of entering formal-functional proportional relation. The contradiction test shows lack of semantic relation between the predicates and definitional suggestions included in the entries of monolingual dictionaries. The same test indicates the occurrence of semantic subsequent relation between predicates: równy 1, równy 2, równy 3, and the predicate kto. przewiduje, że p. (sb. predicts that). Semantic differences between individual units are associated with the kind of predicated objects. In case of równy 1 prediction concerns the set of elements of material objects, in case of równy 2 - physical events, and in case of równy 3 . psychic events.
  • Marcin Lewandowski : The Human Being in the Linguistic Picture of the World in the Punk Subculture
Drawing on the views of linguists from the Lublin school, the paper explores expressive names of the human being in the punk sociolect. Apart from the analysis of general terms, the author focuses on the colloquial names identifying the punk and their main ideological opponent . the skinhead. Even though the verbal repertoire is dominated by pejorative words and expressions, it is possible to reconstruct the values that the punk subculture holds dear (e.g. originality, intelligence or unconventionality). The language material also reflects the values rejected by punks (e.g. violence, aggressiveness and boorishness).
